Linkages between Madden–Julian oscillation and drought events over Kenya

چکیده

Increased frequencies and intensities of extreme weather events have negatively impacted climate-sensitive socio-economic sectors in Kenya larger Equatorial East Africa (EEA). Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) influence intra-seasonal variability over although less attention has been given to its effect on such as droughts floods, which increased frequency intensity. Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) was used this work proxy data for rainfall study the geographical distribution circulation anomalies associated with MJOs their impacts events. Extreme are identified using self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI), based sc-PDSI, 2013/2014 2017/2018 drought flood years, respectively. The background power spectral analysis reveals that more dominant during March–May (MAM) season than other seasons. variance depicted maximum MJO-filtered OLR is cantered within tropical Indian Ocean, maritime continent Pacific Ocean. Upper tropospheric (200 hPa) wind signatures give a clear Matsuno-Gill-type compared lower flows. Thus, can be develop dynamic MJO index prediction purposes. There exists weak direct relationship between sc-PDSI; however, may result from modulation atmospheric illustrated by velocity potential patterns before after passage convective phase.

Linkages Over Time Between Adolescents' Relationships with Parents and Friends

This 5-wave longitudinal study examines linkages over time between adolescents' perceptions of relationships with parents and friends with respect to support, negative interaction, and power. A total of 575 early adolescents (54.1% boys) and 337 middle adolescents (43.3% boys) participated. Path analyses mainly showed bidirectional associations between adolescents' perceptions of parent-adolesc...

Regional moisture budget associated with drought/flood events over China

In this study, long-term (1961–2011) variations in the moisture budget and drought/flood events in six subregions of China are analyzed. Water vapor is mainly transported zonally during winter, while meridional transport is much stronger during summer. During winter, both the input moisture from the western boundary and the output moisture from the eastern boundary are slightly weakened; thus, ...

7 Linkages from Agricultural Growth in Kenya

Kenya is an exciting case for those who suspect that agriculture has powerful linkages with the rest of the economy. Over the period 1965-87 Kenya's agricultural production consistently surpassed the average for Sub-Saharan Africa. The same was true of its manufacturing and services (see World Bank 1989, table 7.1). One possible explanation for this performance is that agricultural growth stimu...

Possible linkages of late-Holocene drought in the North American midcontinent to Pacific Decadal Oscillation and solar activity

[1] Paleorecords are key for evaluating the long-term patterns and controls of drought. We analyzed calcite in annually laminated sediments from a Minnesota lake for oxygen-isotopic composition (dO). The dO record of the past 3100 years reveals that droughts of greater severity and duration than during the 20th century occurred repeatedly, especially prior to 300 AD. Drought variability was ano...

Intraseasonal variations of the tropical total ozone and their connection to the MaddenJulian Oscillation

[1] We investigate the intraseasonal (30–90 day) variations in satellite-observed tropical total ozone (O3) and their connection to theMadden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Tropical total O3 intraseasonal variations are large ( ±10 DU) and comparable to those in annual and interannual time scales. These O3 anomalies are mainly evident in the subtropics over the Pacific and eastern; hemisphere and pr...
